Abstract

Information architecture, as a field of knowledge, is analyzed in relation to the field of Information Science. The history of the conceptual development of information architecture is presented, exploring in particular the applications of classification structures, and also their relationship with the concepts of use, utility and user. The understanding that can be inferred is that information architecture can be conceived as an interdisciplinary field of Information Science and computing. The fundamental principles of this subfield are applied in the case study of the Internet portal of a research institution in the health area, Fundação Oswaldo Cruz. Its functioning, its information structure, the nature of the language adopted, its navigability and its adequacy to the information needs of the portal users are verified.
